Frequently Asked Questions:
If I attend a local high school can I take a course at BSO?
You are more than welcome to take a course with us! All we ask is that you get permission from your principal before you register with us.
If I am working full time can I attend BSO?
Of course. We have a night class on Thursday from 5 pm-8 pm to accommodate those who work during the day. Please indicate at registration if you are interested in attending a Thursday night class. All we ask of those who are not able to attend during the day is that you are in regular communication with us and submit school work on a regular basis. We have a drop slot in our front door so you can leave work for us to mark even when we are closed.
If I have not attended school in a while, can I register at BSO?
The decision to go back to school is not an easy one and we would support you in any way we can. We encourage you to stop by the school and meet with us.
I would like to attend college/university but do not know where to begin to explore programs.
We offer extensive career investigation and post-secondary exploration. We can help you look at programs that might interest you and help you apply.
Does BSO offer career counseling for students?
We encourage our students to take several career exploration credits and to access the Strong Interest Inventory. We also spend a lot of time with students looking at potential programs, reviewing requirements, and planning courses accordingly.
Does BSO offer personal counseling to students?
We are always available to students who need to talk. If the issues you have require more help than we have available, we can assist the students to make contact with an appropriate agency.
If I am from another province can I attend BSO?
Of course. If you have a transcript/report card from the last school you attended, bring it with you when you register. We will help you convert out of province courses into Alberta High School CEU's, and plan your next steps accordingly.
Is there transportation available for students who attend BSO?
The school division offers bus service for students who live out of town. BSO provides students who live in the town with taxi service once the weather gets cold.
Do I have to come to school every day?
Attendance at BSO is flexible. During registration, you will fill out an attendance contract based on when you are available to attend school. The number of courses you will be registered in will be determined by how often you can attend school.
How are courses delivered at BSO?
Courses are available in print as well as online, so you have 24/7 access to materials. All our courses are marked in-house so feedback is immediate. Instructional support is provided on a one-on-one basis when you need it.
How many courses can I take in a year?
This depends on how much time you have to dedicate to your school work. We find that students who attend school every day successfully complete more CEU's than students who do not. Once you complete coursework, you may write the final exam as soon as you are ready and move on to your next course.
Will I get an Alberta High School Diploma if I attend BSO?
Yes. Students who attend BSO and complete the required credits will obtain an official Alberta High School Diploma.
What do I need for school supplies?
It is recommended that students supply their own pens, pencils, notebooks, binders, and paper. However, if required, the school does have these supplies for students who need them. The school has desktop computers and laptops for student use. The school also has available graphing calculators for students to use while at school.
